Tony Greenstein, author of Zionism During the Holocaust, discusses the history of Zionism and anti-Zionism. Zionism before World War II was a minority position among Jews mostly associated with elite and right-wing politics. Political Zionism was a Christian invention first and has always had a strong affinity with antisemitism, to the extent that many Jewish Zionists have expressed support for antisemitism. Many were themselves profoundly antisemitic.

Tony describes the price he has paid for being a premature anti-Zionist and for failing to compromise his principles. He has been expelled from UK’s Labour and Green Parties. He was also charged under the UK’s terrorism act and faced 14 years in prison. Rather than leaving the matter to his barrister, Tony gave his own speech to summarise his defence – a speech that has since been published around the world.
